Google Now, Anticipatory Systems, and the Future of Big Data | MIT

If the last century was marked by the ability to observe the interactions of physical matter—think of technologies like x-ray and radar—this century, he says, is going to be defined by the ability to observe people through the data they share…”

Big Data Gets Bigger: Now Google Trends Can Predict The Market - Forbes

Yesterday three economists, (Tobias Preis of Warwick Business School in the U.K., Helen Susannah Moat of University College London, and H. Eugene Stanley of Boston University) published an eye-opening paper that said Google Trends data was useful in predicting daily price moves in the Dow Jones industrial average, which consists of 30 stocks.

Gerd adds: yet another reason why the current form of stock markets won’t exist in 5 years;)

And how are we, whose egos are already more fragile than a porcelain potty, supposed to feel when we know that a glasses-wearer has one eye on us and another on our Klout score or teenage sexting pictures? The site explains: “Gradually people will stop acting as autonomous individuals, when making decisions and interacting with others, and instead become mere sensor/effector nodes of a global network.” (via Google Glass: The opposition grows | Technically Incorrect - CNET News)

In a move that would help Google (GOOG) continue its push beyond the Internet and into the realm of consumer electronics, the company reportedly plans to open its own retail stores ahead of the holidays this year. 9to5Google says a single “extremely reliable source” confirmed that Google will open stores in several major metropolitan areas across the United States. The stores will reportedly be used to showcase and sell the company’s Nexus-brand devices as well as computers running Chrome OS. The stores may also be a perfect place to show off Motorola’s upcoming “X Phone.” Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Facebook: Graph Search Announcment (by Tilo Hensel)

Gerd adds: this is pretty amazing stuff. Watch Zuck speak - I think this is a very big deal in Facebook’s evolution … to be the next Google.

Plus-One This: Proof That Google Plus Will Prevail | Fast Company

Google Plus is really Google’s version of Google. It’s the groundwork for a level of search quality difficult to fathom based on what we know today. It’s also the Borg-like hive-queen that connects all the other Google products like YouTube, Google Maps, Images, Offers, Books, and more. And Google is starting to roll these products all up into a big ball of awesome user experience by way of Google Plus, and that snowball is starting to pick up speed and mass.

Now Hyundai has jumped on board the Google bandwagon and announced that it will include Google Maps in its vehicles sold within the US. Google Maps will supplant the current navigation system built into Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics platform. Hyundai says this new addition will make finding destinations easier for drivers. Think about it for a minute: Google knows our deepest secrets because we search with INTENTION - and in realtime, and often even in real-place (i.e. when using mobile devices) - for the things that matter to us - whether it is an upcoming trip or a disease that we are suffering from, or vexing problem we may have. Google knows all that stuff, and keeps it in their records (unless we take steps to delete it all… allegedly). Facebook, on the other hand, just knows what we SAY, what we share, what we purport to LIKE. That’s also quite deep but… there is a big difference. Your thoughs? Mobile Futures: rebooting everything

It’s not only newspapers and magazines that are wrestling with this – though, of course, the announcement by Newsweek that it’s going digital-only next year shows that they’re in the frontline. (“Is Heaven real? Newsweek intends to find out”, as one ironist put it on Twitter.)
Add superfast 4G connections – which we’ll have in the UK from next year – and you may wonder if the only safe business is dry-cleaning (though even that is prey to people buying cheap replacement clothes made in China).
